In Poland, there are several universities with strong organizational units that comprehensively support faculty members, including the development of their competencies. At the same time, many institutions struggle with challenges in this area. The aim of this essay is to expand the discussion on the professionalization of individuals and the aforementioned units by incorporating an international perspective. The article explores the concept of the educational developer and the responsibilities of those employed in this or similar roles. It presents and analyzes insights from the International Consortium for Educational Development (ICED) conference, which took place in Nairobi in July 2024. Topics covered include the functioning of teaching development/support units and analogous university-wide centers, models of educational change, methods for motivating faculty, and certification of acquired skills. The article concludes with a list of questions situating the discussed issues in the Polish context, as well as an invitation to contribute to the educational developers community, join ICED, and share experiences in the pages of the International Journal for Academic Development (IJAD).
